It is a great accomplishment for any school to receive recognition as a Reward School and we are excited to have five in our district! All the hard work from last year paid off. It was a tough year for everyone involved. Thank you to our staff for working so hard last year, and this year, during the pandemic. We feel confident that students in Gibson County Special School District are in a place where they can get one of the best educations in the state because of our great teachers and staff.
• GCSSD was named an exemplary district, only 1 of 7 in the state.
• GCSSD also had TVAAS level 5 scores. This is the fifth straight year the district has scored level 5 on TVAAS. Since 2012/13 the district has been a level 5 except for one year, 2014/15. (There were no TVAAS scores in 2019/20.)

Our school system’s priority has been and will remain providing safe, in-person learning for all students. In order to develop a plan for the use of ESSER III funds, your input is necessary and crucial to our collective progress. GCSSD will be offering COVID-19 tests at school for grades 5-12.
Testing will only be done with parent permission and in the following circumstances:
• For those who visit the nurse with COVID-like symptoms according to the Tennessee Department of Health (TDOH) School Decision Support Algorithm.
• For those who need a test to return to school early from quarantine (day 5 and after, return on day 8, if no symptoms)
• For those who require testing for school travel or athletics.
Students tested at school must have a signed parental consent for permission to test.
The tests done at school only test for COVID-19 and do not exclude other illnesses, so a health care providers evaluation will be needed for symptomatic students. Tests are not 100% accurate and false negatives and positives can occur. Symptomatic students will be given a rapid test first and if negative a 30-minute PCR.

Mental and emotional health are critical for student success. By building and maintaining school mental health supports and services, GCSSD wants to enable our students to achieve their full potential. We would like to know what areas of concern that parents have regarding their students’ mental health; therefore, we are asking for 8th-12th grade parents to complete this short anonymous survey so that we may plan to serve our students in the best way possible.

Attention Parents,
If you have a child who is attending Kenton School this year and must take medication at school, you must obtain the health care providers signature on the medication form prior to any prescription medication being administered. We will not fax forms this year. There is also a place for parent /guardian signature and phone number.
Also, due to the new mandates and protocols being implemented at our schools, it is highly encouraged that all morning medications be administered at home prior to arrival.
Medication sheets are available for pickup at the school.
The same paperwork with a parent signature is required for any “Over the Counter” medications to be administered. Example: Tylenol, Benadryl, Ibuprofen, etc. A health care provider’s signature is not needed for over the counter medications unless dose is different than that on the bottle.
Medication Guidelines:
1. Prescription Medications require a doctor’s signature on the proper medication sheet or the medication will not be administered.
2. All prescription/over the counter medications have to be brought in by a parent/guardian only.
3. Once you arrive at the school with the student’s medication please ring the door bell and ask for the nurse. The nurse will then meet you at the door and accept the student’s medication. The medication will be counted by the nurse in front of the parent/adult.
4. If your student’s prescription medicine is a suspension/liquid then please provide enough for at least two weeks to a month of doses. This way outside contact will be limited between parents/staff.
5. Prescription Inhalers will also require new medication sheets with directions and a doctor’s signature.
6. Prescription Epi-Pens require a medication sheet and a doctor’s signature. The school does have Epi-Pens available for Emergencies only.
7. All prescription medications must be brought to school in the properly labeled container from the pharmacy. Ask the pharmacist to label a medication bottle for home and school if you will need to keep some medications at home.
8. All prescription medications must be up to date. We will not administer medications from last school year.
9. All Over the Counter Medications require a parent’s signature. Students can’t bring any meds to the nursing office.
10. Over the counter medications must be brought to school in an unopened bottle with the label attached and visible. Write your students name on the bottle or box.
We do not administer adult doses to children so be sure you purchase the correct dosage. Medication must be in date.
If you have any questions please feel free to contact me by email at: callinsa1@gcssd.org
I will be glad to help you in any way possible. I’m excited for a new school year and I look forward to seeing all the kids.
Thanks,
Amanda Callins, LPN
